I look at the date today with a mixture of shock a I look at the date today with a mixture of shock and gratitude and joy. Today marks the day I finally took the step to open my private practice. It feels surreal to recognize that a whole year has passed by since then, and I am flabbergasted by all the changes myself, and the collective world, have gone through. Transformation is hard. Change is frightening. But living authentically is worth it. Thank you to my friends, family and community for supporting this dream every step of the way!

As Social Work Week draws to a close, it's importa As Social Work Week draws to a close, it's important to remind all of our fellow professionals to take care of themselves in this inspiring but draining work we do every day.
..
Social workers are under a high risk for burn out on a regular basis due to poor funding, lack of support and pressure to be a Jack-of-all-trades in many of the roles we play. We carry the trauma of our clients while also being mindful of full caseloads, performance measures and legal restrictions to the way we provide our services. ..
We need to support one another but also know the limits of our own scopes and our boundaries, to remind ourselves that we cannot lose ourselves in this work! Prioritize your self care. Be brave in asking for what you need. Put your health and wellness on the list of things you need to do so you can continue to do this amazing job for the communities you serve! ..

Real talk. I tried to take a nice professional loo Real talk. I tried to take a nice professional looking selfie to show my awesome 'EAT SLEEP SOCIAL WORK REPEAT' shirt, but it was like a siren call for my children to basically photo bomb for all they were worth.
.
You can see my absolute cringe of anticipation, preparing to get a stray toy car jammed up my nostril or an elbow to the teeth as it became open season to crawl all over me just to get in front of that camera. 30 seconds prior, they were happily playing.

Note the burnt toast, that I found sometime MUCH l Note the burnt toast, that I found sometime MUCH later after starting one task and forgetting entirely that I had started to make myself something to eat. Note the second set of slices, cooking once I realized I had abandoned my snack from 2 hours previous and was attempting to eat again.
.
This is the life of the easily distracted, the constantly multitasking, the mentally divided. Can you relate to that sort of day? Starting one task and then getting side tracked and forgetting entirely where you started?
.
Somedays I feel like I have 30 tabs open in my internet browser and my brain! 🧠
.
Human beings are awful at multitasking and yet we strive for that all the time.

Self care can be such a buzz word, synonymous with Self care can be such a buzz word, synonymous with bath bombs and face masks. But when we care for ourselves or others, it is sometime about doing the hard work - we don't always find the acts of caring easy or pleasant!
..
When your mother made you eat your vegetables, go to the dentist, clean your room, or teach you right from wrong, you didn't always enjoy it but you knew she was doing it out of caring. Setting goals for yourself and achieving them may take perseverance but you'll feel how much you are loved (by yourself!) when that hard work pays off!

Come rain or snow, your social worker is out there Come rain or snow, your social worker is out there! Many social workers or helping professionals have 'mobile offices' like my rolling file box here. We work out in your community, bringing services to you no matter the weather. I've known many a counselor who could run their business pretty much from the trunk of their car based on all the extra resources, supplies and text books filling their trunks and back seats.
This is just one look at the daily life of a therapist and all the many roles we play.
What's your experience with working outside of a regular office? How do you manage to stay organized despite it all?
