ABOUT

Meet Jen

As a mother of 2 and a Registered Social Worker, life keeps me pretty busy. I’m always juggling the expectations of motherhood and my job and sometimes it feels like I’m losing my mind one day at a time. I wouldn’t give it up for the world, but if you’re like me, you can relate to feeling like sometimes you need a helping hand.

With a Bachelors and a Masters in Social Work, over a decade of experience in the field and a Basic Training Certificate in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), I’m eager to help you reach your own goals; related to stress, anxiety, depression, or any number of concerns. I’m here to help.

I work well with those who see therapy as an investment in themselves, and who are willing to sometimes ask the uncomfortable questions and explore themselves with kindness and compassion.

There is no quick fix in this world, but knowing you don’t have to do the work alone can make all the difference. I try to make my sessions fun, challenging and rewarding. You’ll always leave with a new thought, a new skill, or a new pattern of being.

My job is to give you the tools to be your best self.

The human soul doesn't want to be advised, or fixed, or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed - to be seen, heard and acknowledged exactly as it is.

– Parker Palmer

In being a social worker, much of my days are spent on supporting others in working through their thoughts, feelings and behaviours to try and both understand themselves and reach their goals. I hope to be able to continue to do this in my private practice and invite you to connect with me to see if my style of therapy is the right fit for you. I’m always excited and inspired by my clients in their thoughtfulness and commitment to the change process, and you’ll find I’m an enthusiastic partner in my working relationships, happy to be flexible with my methods to suit your unique personality.

While you’re here, please feel free to browse my blog which is full of great tips, tricks and theories related to mental health and daily living. Writing has always been a therapeutic way for me to open up and to explore my thoughts and feelings. In fact, it’s a passion of mine I’ve kept up in my spare time (limited as it feels some days), and I came to the idea of Mental Health Mama when I realized that when I wrote, the answers were always right there for me. And why was I hogging all the insight?

My hope is that Mental Health Mama can be a blog where others can hear my story, learn some new strategies, or just get a sense they aren’t alone in the world. I also hope to break down the assumption that those of us in the helping professions are somehow immune to all the same day to day stressors everyone else has. I try to practice what I preach!

In these pages you might read about the hectic chaos that happens in my home, or my office, on a daily basis. I’ll offer suggestions and tips for how to tackle some of common issues in the mental health and parenting worlds from my therapy experience. But I’ll also let you see how human we can be; I’ll show you my failures, my successes, my good and bad days. It might help all of us to be a little more open and uncensored, and to know it’s OK not to be OK.

So get ready for my own dry brand of humour, my love affair with commas and a lot of experience on both sides of the couch. I can’t wait for us to share together on this journey through the messy parts of life!
